Renovation to the house is spread over 1 basement level and 4 above-ground levels of 120 sqm each for a total id 480 sqm. In view of the precarious state of preservation of the building, the design of the renovation was conducted in order to ensure improvements from a structural point of view: the foundations were reinforced, the historic stone perimeter walls were preserved and consolidated while the floors and roof were demolished and rebuilt with insertion of steel chains for effective structural connection against seismic events. The reinforcement of the vertical structures was designed and executed through joint restrengthening and scuci-cuci techniques while the floors and roof were built with a new wooden structure. The new structures (floors, stairs, and roof) were calculated and designed in wood respecting their original configuration; moreover, wood, a lighter material than reinforced concrete, made it possible to limit heavy loads on the vertical structures but at the same time it was possible to restore the so-called “box behavior” of the building by casting collaborating hoods in lightened reinforced concrete.Of a house in the historic center
